How Can Essential Oils Be Used?

Essential oils can be used in different ways depending on the oil, the product and what you would like to do. Not every oil is suitable for every method, so always check its label and ask if you are uncertain.

Common ways

  • 01 — Aromatically

    Enjoyed through the sense of smell—for example, in a diffuser, through direct inhalation or as part of a simple daily ritual.

  • 02 — Topically

    Applied to the skin according to the product directions. Some oils should be diluted with a suitable carrier oil before use.

  • 03 — Internally

    Certain oils are labelled for internal use and may be used as directed. Never take an oil internally unless its label specifically allows it.

Essential oils are highly concentrated. Always follow the individual product label, keep oils away from children and seek appropriate professional advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or receiving medical care.

Genuine essential oils are concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from plants—from their flowers, leaves, peel, wood, roots or resin.

dōTERRA essential oils are tested for purity and consistency, without synthetic fragrance, fillers or artificial alteration. Because they are highly concentrated, a drop—or sometimes even less—may be all you need.

  • Less Is More

    Begin with a small amount and follow the directions on the individual product label. More is not always better.

  • Dilution Has a Purpose

    When used on the skin, a carrier oil can make application gentler and help spread the essential oil over a wider area.

  • Every Oil Is Different

    Each oil has its own directions and precautions. A method that suits one oil may not be appropriate for another.
